Ground Treatment for West Nile Virus Scheduled for Rockville Centre

Areas throughout Nassau County will be sprayed from Aug. 6-9.

Based on the current mosquito trap data and consistent with the 2012 Nassau County Mosquito Control Plan, the Nassau County Departments of Health and Public Works have recommended that localized truck treatment of adulticide continue at targeted areas in the county. This recommendation is based on the persistent presence of West Nile virus and mosquito activity at these locations.

Weather permitting the current schedule for ground treatment by truck is as follows:

Monday, Aug. 6 - 7 p.m. - 2 a.m. – All of Island Park and sections of Barnum Island, Bay Park, East Rockaway, Harbor Isle, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett,  Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Lynbrook, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, Valley Stream, Woodmere and Woodsburgh. Adulticide application by truck will be conducted and bounded by the following geographical areas:

  • Area 1: All roads in Island Park
  • Area 2: Peninsula Boulevard to Lakeview Avenue on the south, Long Beach Road on the east and Woodmere Boulevard on the west.

Tuesday, Aug. 7 - 7 p.m. - 2 a.m. – Sections of Cedarhurst, Hewlett Neck, Inwood, Lawrence, Woodmere and Woodsburgh. Adulticide application by truck will be conducted and bounded by the following geographical area:

  • Areas south of Peninsula Boulevard and west of Woodmere Boulevard

Thursday, Aug. 9 - 7 p.m. - 2 a.m. – Sections of Farmingdale, Levittown, North Massapequa, Plainedge and South Farmingdale. Adulticide application by truck will be conducted and bounded by the following geographical area:

  • Hempstead Turnpike on the north, the Southern State Parkway on the south, the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway on the west and the Suffolk County Border on the east.

Alternate/Rain Date: Wednesday, Aug. 15.

Maps of the areas to be treated can be found on the Department of Health website.

Scourge is a pesticide containing resmethrin and piperonyl butoxide. Resmethrin is a man-made pyrethroid insecticide that can also be found in other pesticide products used indoors and on pets to control ticks and other insects, such as fleas and ants. Piperonyl butoxide does not directly kill insects on its own, but acts to increase the ability of resmethrin to kill insects. These active ingredients are dissolved in a petroleum solvent.

Health Effects: The chance of experiencing any health effects from the use of Scourge to control mosquitoes is quite low. As with any pesticide, individuals may want to reduce or eliminate exposure.

To Reduce Exposure: The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) do not require relocating or taking special precautions during mosquito control treatment. Individuals, especially pregnant women and children, should remain inside during the treatment and for about 30 minutes afterwards. In addition, individuals may minimize exposure by:

  • Keeping windows and doors shut, setting air conditioners to re-circulate if able. Turn window fans off.
  • Keeping children's toys indoors.
  • Keeping pets indoors, as well as their food, water dishes and toys.
  • Covering fishponds during the spray period.

Since the effects of the ground treatment dissipate in a few hours, it is not necessary to wash off outdoor furniture or playground equipment before use, although doing so will not diminish the effectiveness of the pesticide applied. For additional information: Please call the West Nile Virus Treatment Hotline at 1-888-844-8657 or visit the Nassau County Department of Health website.

DPF, I found the link for the 500 ranking. It came from schooldigger.com and since that figure wasRead More put out before the bond vote, it was for 2011. Since then the 2012 figures have been updated and South Side is now ranked at #151 along with 14 other schools at #151. Unlike, the district, all I would like to see is information being brought to the public's attention. This is why I am posting the uptick in the schooldigger rating. So this is where we stand: Schooldigger #151 up from #508 in NY State US News #117 down from #22 in nation Newsweek #312 (I don't know what we were last year) The main point, however, is that when the ranking is good, you put out a press release and hang a banner on the wall. When the ranking declines, you are silent. This is especially egregious right before a contested board of ed election. Perhaps you are right that there really is no way to rank a school. But if that's the case, then the district can't just pick and choose which ranking to make public.

Been there done that: how disgusting of you to list descriptions of the PTA president and then hideRead More behind your anonymous posting. You should be ashamed of yourself. Want someone to post your employment status??

I'm enjoying your selective issues Never said the demographics changed, you clearly missed my pointRead More The bond was passed because the elementary parents got involved. Also, the bond was a smart move, borrowing money at such a low rate. Any accountant would tell you that The bond vote has NOTHING to do with affording college. One is $120 a year, the other is a 30 to 50 K expenditure. If you think the rise of 2 year colleges admissions doesn't have to do with the economy, then we can end our discussion now. The superintendent was given a 1 time annuity. Next year, he will be back to his usual top 10 ranking. Once again, nothing to do with test scores and if the public was so outraged, why aren't the board members being recalled? Still waiting for link of the 500 ranking in NYS Haven't located it

Hey Matt Hogan, While I don't buy into posts that you are Johnson's press secretary and him havingRead More a hand in running this publication, I do believe myself and many other readers here would appreciate an in depth, unbiased and objective interview w/ him asking the tuff questions your readers asked here. He always seems available to comment on and inflate the slightest bit of positive news, perhaps he would like the opportunity to comment on and explain his take on the latest rankings, etc. Have you or any member of your staff ever directly interviewed him or requested and interview w/ him and would you consider requesting such an interview?

It is nothing short of amazing that people are still rushing to the defense of Johnson/Burris andRead More their minions at the PTA. What's wrong w/ you people? When the rankings come out positive they do everything they can to publicise them from plaques on the wall to streaming video on the district website and everything in between. Yet not a peep on the latest rankings. 500+ ranking in NYS, people thats based solely on test scores not the # of kids taking the test and how many free lunches the district provides. Do any of you wonder at all why Johnson encouraged kids to "opt out" of NYS testing? If so let me help you out...The scores are going to be awful and would have been worse had all the kids participated. The quality of life in this town and its education system is circling the bowl, we need positive change not the same old go along to get along mentality. Pls think about voting for Ms Rubino, we need some balance and accountability on that board not a bunch of Johnson puppets. Not sure when Johnson's contract is up but he too has got to go, he is slowly destroying this district. We might try to hire Baldwin's superintendant as he really seems to know what he is doing when it comes to AP.

This is the funniest blog post ever. Someone thinks Patch is run by Johnson, another should haveRead More used the more appropriate pseudonym "know it all" and the most recent thinks the PTA is ruining our neighborhood. Go to a meeting, get involved, educate yourself. If you can't go to a meeting watch the local government and school channel. Then perhaps you would know that the bulk of the school budget is dictated by NY state.
