BOE Recap: Oppenheimer Votes Against MOU With Molloy

Trustee said he is not against the deal, but needs more details.

The village board approved a resolution at Monday's board meeting authorizing a memo of understanding with moving the village closer to completing a deal with the school to renovate four .

Trustee Ed Oppenheimer was the lone trustee to vote against the MOU, though the agreement is non-binding and doesn't commit the village to anything. Oppenheimer said he felt uncomfortable voting to enter into a MOU without having seen the details of the memo, which as of Monday, had not been solidified.

"I don't have a problem with the Molloy deal," Oppenheimer explained. "I just want to get the details right."

He added that he has a problem authorizing a document that had not been completed and that the "devil is in the details."

Trustee Mike Sepe said MOUs are "in principle agreements" that do not define the scope of a deal, but even without the details, it shouldn't hold up voting on the project. "Regardless of what it says, it is not binding for the village to do anything," he said.

Mayor Francis Murray said that all the parties involved are on board with the project and is elated on how it will improve village sports. "It's wonderful for our children," he said.

Deputy Mayor Nancy Howard noted that not only will it improve village sports, but make it safer for children to play on the fields, which have deteriorated over the last decade. "Safety for our children is a paramount issue," she said.
