Becker Keeps GOP Nomination

Defeats Scaturro, Maloney in primary; will face McCarthy in November.

Francis Becker retained the Republican nomination in Tuesday's primary in the 4th Congressional District, staving off challengers Dan Maloney and Frank Scaturro for the right to challenge Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, a Democrat, in the November election.

With 96 percent of precincts counted by the Nassau County Board of Elections early Wednesday, Becker received nearly 50 percent of the votes with 10,361 . Scaturro garnered 7,733 votes, and Maloney got 2,945.

Becker is a Lynbrook resident and longtime Nassau County lawmaker in the 6th Legislative District. A spokesman for Becker said he would release a statement on the results at around 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Maloney said he was proud of the work he and his Tea Party volunteers did over the course of his campaign. He offered kind words for Becker, and stressed the need for all Republicans to come together and help Becker defeat McCarthy.

"I congratulate Fran Becker on his victory in this race and I will do whatever is in my power to assist him in defeating Carolyn McCarthy in November," he said. "We all need to unite to recapture the Congress in November."

Maloney and Scaturro entered the 4th Congressional District race well before their opponent, but Becker was ultimately nominated by the county Republican Party.

The three took part in a heated debate at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library at the end of August, and, in the weeks following, continued to publicly question one another's qualifications for Congress.

The election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 2.
