South Hempstead Man Busted with Pounds of Pot, $27K

A South Hempstead man was arrested on Sunday after police apparently found six pounds of marijuana and almost $27,000 in cash in his house.

At about 8:30 p.m., detectives on burglary patrol observed Jonathan Moreno, 24, of 567 Stratford Rd., looking into a 2005 Toyota parked in front of his residence, according to police. The defendant stated that he owned the vehicle and told the detectives that they could accompany him inside his residence to retrieve identification and show proof that he owned the vehicle.

When the detectives entered the house, they apparently detected a strong odor of marijuana and observed in plain view a digital scale, heat sealer, a marijuana pipe and a plastic bag containing marijuana. Further investigation led to the recovery of six pounds of marijuana, a money counter and $26,915 in cash.
