Shiloh Church Steeple Falls Off Base, Secured by RVCFD

No one injured Saturday night after steeple dangles from church roof.

The Rockville Centre Fire Department responded to the Shiloh Baptist Church on N. Centre Avenue Saturday night after receiving a call about the church's steeple dangling from its roof.

At about 6:45 p.m. the fire department arrived at the church, located at 95 N. Centre Ave. and saw that the steeple on top of the church roof had fallen off its base.

According to Chief John Busching the steeple was "dangling precariously and in danger of falling to the street below endangering pedestrians and traffic on Morgan Days Lane."

Eureka Hook and Ladder unit 447 was called to the scene under the direction of chiefs, Busching said. The firefighters secured the steeple to the roof after it was determined that the structure was too large to attempt to successfully remove it from the roof.

The firefighters then covered the open base with a tarp to prevent damage from the weather, Busching said.

During the operation the temperature was about 38 degrees with moderate winds. The operation at the church was concluded just after 8 p.m.

The above information was provided by the Rockville Centre Police Department.

Great work by the Fire Dept. securing the area for Christmas Services. On Christmas Eve, Hale Storm of Freeport Signs arrived with a heavy crane to safely remove the steeple from the rooftop. Those steeples are not just decorative....within was a lightening rod assembly that also held the steeple's cross.
