RVCPD Names 'Cop of the Month' in Wake of Attempted Murder

The Rockville Centre Police Department has named Sgt. Edward Calder its "Cop of the Month" in recognition of his dedicated performance of duty that resulted in the arrest of a subject for attempted murder in April.

On April 26 at approximately 1:30 p.m., while on patrol, Calder responded to investigate a report of a disoriented female walking in the roadway in the vicinity of Hempstead Avenue and Lakeview Avenue.

Upon Calder's arrival, he observed a female running toward a nearby pedestrian and as she approached the pedestrian, the suspect displayed a knife and stabbed the pedestrian multiple times. Calder immediately notified police headquarters of the situation and requested additional resources.

Due to the imminent nature of the situation, and before the arrival of assisting officers, Calder drew his weapon and ordered the suspect to the ground.

Once on the ground, the suspect started to cut herself on the arms and neck with the knife in an attempt to kill herself. The subject then got up off the ground and ran into her residence which was several feet away.

As additional police officers arrived, Calder established a perimeter around the residence to ensure that the suspect would not escape.

Minutes later, the suspect emerged from the residence through a side door, this time without the knife, and she was once again ordered to the ground. While effecting her arrest, she violently resisted arrest, requiring multiple officers to physically subdue her.

The residence was immediately checked for additional victims and it was determined that the residence was now unoccupied. During the search for additional victims, the knife that was used, with blood still on it, was found in a bathroom.

The victim was treated at the scene for multiple stab wounds and transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment. The suspect was charged with attempted murder, assault in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and resisting arrest.

"For the diligence, dedication to duty, and highly professional conduct that [Calder] displayed in regard to this occurrence, it is my pleasure to congratulate [him] on a 'job well done,'" Commissioner Charles Gennario said of Calder's actions.
