RVC PD to Start Explorer Program

Village will have first post outside of the Nassau County Police Department.

The Rockville Centre Police Department is starting its own Explorer program post in the village, where community youths who are interested in a career in law enforcement can receive a first-hand look at the inner-workings of the department.

Children between the ages of 14 and 20 are welcome to join. Commissioner Charles Gennario said the program offers, " a positive alternative to negative behavior." He added that the interest among village youths has been overwhelming, explaining that he hoped to have five applicants and already has 12.

This will be the first Explorer post outside of the Nassau County's police Explorer program, Gennario said. The first meeting will be in July.

Explorers will participate in ride-a-longs with officers, learn about police paperwork and assist the department at events like parades and public gatherings. The program helps youths build character, learn life skills and how to make ethical decisions, as well as prepares them to be responsible adults.

If your child is interested in joining, contact the village police department.
