Murder Suspect Faces Sex Abuse Charge

Maxwell Sherman arraigned, charged with sexually abusing Lauren Daverin before her murder.

A Long Beach man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he sexually abusing a Lynbrook woman before killing her.

An indictment against Maxwell Sherman, 18, of Long Beach, officially charged him with first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree murder, Newsday reported. He was arraigned before Judge Meryl Berkowitz at Nassau County Court in Mineola.

Sherman is accused of murdering 18-year-old Lauren Daverin, a newlywed from Lynbrook, on Aug. 22 in Rockville Centre.

Sherman's attorney, William Petrillo, of Garden City, reportedly deferred on asking for bail as of Wednesday and Sherman was remanded to Nassau County Jail until his trial, said the report.

Police said Daverin's body was discovered on a footbridge between Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway after 10 p.m. Aug. 22. She was reportedly beaten and was found with some clothing removed.

Sherman was interviewed by reporters before his arrest and said he was "amazed" and "surprised" by Daverin's tragic death. He was charged three days after her death.

The next trial date was not reported.
