Crime Nearby: Missing Dog Reunited with Family After Burglary

Missing Merrick Dog Reunites with Family

The Merrick family whose dog disappeared after a burglary has been reunited with their canine companion, according to News 12 Long Island.

According to cops, the Lafkas family's home on Merrick Avenue was broken into via a basement window between 10:30 a.m. and 2:05 p.m. on July 29. Stolen items include a flat-screen TV, jewelry, an X-Box video game system, an iPad, a cell phone and designer handbags. The suspect(s) then left the scene via the front door.
Also missing from the home was their 2-year-old Bichon-Shih Tzu, named Cookie. It's unknown whether Cookie was taken by the burglar or escaped via the front door.
The family declined to say how or where Cookie was found, News 12 reported.

  • On July 23 at 11:25 a.m., KOHLS 7/23/2013 OCEANSIDE Clemente Rivera, 39, of Chesterfield, N.J., was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree and four violations of the vehicle and traffic law at Kohls, located at 600 Long Beach Road in Oceanside.
  • On July 27 on 4:20 a.m., Nicholas Natal, 26 of Long Beach, was arrested and charged with DWI on Long Beach Road at Daly Boulevard in Oceanside.

Case Reports

  • Between 7:30 p.m. on July 27 and 8:30 a.m. on July 28, an unknown suspect(s) stole electronics from complainant's 2012 Dodge while it was parked at the Ramada Inn located at 1000 Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre.

  • Between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on July 22, an unknown suspect(s) damaged a complainant's flower pot that was next to their house on Moore Avenue in Oceanside.

  • Between 2:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., a complainant discovered damage to his chain link fence on Sunnyside Road in Oceanside.

  • Between 7 p.m. on July 26 and 7 a.m. on July 29, an unknown suspect(s) damaged a 2011 Chevy and 2004 GMC that were parked in the parking lot at Merle Avenue School, located at 145 Merle Ave. in Oceanside.

  • Between 7 p.m. on July 22 and 12:30 p.m. on July 23, an unknown suspect(s) broke the rear window of complainant's 2012 Honda CRV.
