Blaze Breaks Out in Jefferson Avenue Apartment

Officials said a toaster oven sparked the fire.

A toaster oven sparked a fire in a Jefferson Avenue apartment on Monday morning that destroyed its kitchen, officials said.

According to Mark Murray, chief of the Rockville Centre Fire Department, a toaster oven in a second-floor apartment at 14 Jefferson Ave. somehow caught fire. The flames traveled up the kitchen walls, he explained, though the fire was contained to the kitchen. No one was hurt in the one-alarm blaze, Murray said, but the teenager who lived in the apartment was noticeably shaken.

Christyne Miller, 18, said she was cooking food in a toaster oven, when all of a sudden, "there were flames and smoke everywhere." She said she immediately called the fire department.

The amount of monetary damage done to the kitchen is unknown, officials said, but there was damage to the apartment above it. Fire departments from Oceanside, RVC, Baldwin and Lakeview responded to the call.
