Alleged Drunk Driver Hits Pedestrian in Rockville Centre

Victim was crossing Sunrise Highway near North Centre Avenue when he was struck.

A pedestrian was critically injured after he was struck by an alleged drunk driver while crossing Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre on Wednesday night.

According to Nassau County police, the 25-year-old man was crossing north to south near North Centre Avenue when he was hit by motorist John Tobin, 23, of Freeport.

The vehicle, a 1998 Ford Explorer, was traveling eastbound in the right lane. After striking the pedestrian, the defendant’s vehicle collided with the center median causing it to overturn and come to a rest on its roof in the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition with two fractured legs and internal injuries.

No injuries were reported by the defendant.

Tobin is charged with second-degree vehicular assault and two counts of Driving While Intoxicated. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday.
