McCarthy on Committee Passage of Assault Weapons Ban

Congresswoman sponsored the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 to restrict civilian access to assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-4th District, sponsor of the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 to restrict civilian access to assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, issued the following statement on Thursday's Senate Judiciary Committee passage of the bill:

“Restrictions on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines were once federal law and are the law of the land in numerous states right now, but passing a new federal bill will take great courage on the part of lawmakers.

“While the senate continues to work to draft a compromise package of legislation to vote on, we need that majority of Americans that support restrictions on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines to speak up and urge their representatives to vote in their interest.

“We can reduce gun violence and save lives while upholding the Second Amendment and I look forward to working with my colleagues to achieve these shared goals.”

Most crimes in the USA are committed with a hand gun. Legislating a ban on assault weapons is truly disingenuous. I would guess in the last 10 years we have had 50 mass murders with semi automatic weapons. I know this is still 50 to many but this law will not prevent these crimes from happening. Every year 38,000 people are killed by people with handguns.
The ban makes exceptions for 2207 assault weapons. I guess you just have to change your gun brand. I personally have no problem waving my second amendment right to carry a weapon, but for those who want their guns then their gun choices must become very limited. We need to have legislation that provides legitimate verifiable background checks, a national registration for all guns. We need inspections by police of where people store their gun. They must pass a safety certification test. The bill should prohibit fully automatic,self-loading or burst-fire weapons, limit handgun ownership to those that can prove a legitimate sporting, collecting, or work-related reason. Only allow muzzled loaded 6 shot weapons. Sport rifles for hunting and target practice should be permitted. Gun owners must re-register and list all gun serial numbers every 5 years. I know people say these liberals got to go. I'm as hard a right wing dedicated advocate to limit gun ownership because I believe the more guns the more killings. If people or Criminals use unregistered guns or bullets they go to jail 5,10 20 years no questions asked.
