Baldwin's Weidman KOs UFC Middleweight Champ

Chris Weidman knocked out Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight championship Saturday night.

Baldwin local Chris Weidman was 10-0 heading into Saturday night's heavily anticipated fight with middleweight champ Anderson Silva at UFC 162 in Las Vegas.

Just 1:18 into the second round, a series of punches -- including a big left cross -- helped Weidman up his record to 11-0 and grab the middleweight championship.

Silva, considered by many critics to be the greatest mixed martial arts fighter of all time, hadn't lost in 17 straight matches and was the middleweight champ for nearly seven years, according to the Huffington Post.

Weidman is a 2002 graduate of Baldwin High School where he wrestled as a New York State champion. He then wrestled for two seasons at Nassau Community College before joining Hofstra University, where he became a two-time All-American wrestler.
After the win, Weidman showed his love for Long Island on Twitter:

"God is good! Thanks to everyone that believed in me!! Belts coming back to longisland baby!!"
