Animal Shelter Needs Help Caring For Sandy Victims' Pets

The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter has been taking care of many dogs and cats belonging to families who have been devastated by Hurricane Sandy this week but it needs help.

"We have been patrolling the hardest hit communities and are helping people and their beloved pets by providing supplies, food and medical care. We have also brought in many many displaced animals that have been separated from their owners," the shelter posted on its Facebook page.

Although the shelter has been working diligently with HSUS and the Pet Safe Coalition,to reunite people with their pets, they are currently at maximum capacity and desperately need more space.

"We are expecting things to get worse before they get better and help is needed from the community," a spokesperson for the shelter stated.

If you are able to help, please call or email one of the following contacts:
  • Shari Pollen, Rescue Liaison 516-785-5220 ext. 4638; spolen@tohmail.org
  • Nancy Giris, Adoption Coordinator 516-785-5220 Ext. 4642; ngiris@tohmail.org
  • Wendy Cariello, Offsite Adoption Coordinator 516-785-5220 ext. 4641; wcariello@tohmail.org
The shelter is also looking for donations of dog and cat food, cat litter, leashes, collars, treats, and food bowls. These items can be brought to the shelter, which is located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh.

TO dad, You are not put on this planet to have the last word over matters such as the lives of wonderful animals. I have two cats that became my loving pets a yr ago because someone w/ a narrow mentality as You, left these kittens inside a box on a cold winter night on a sidewalk. My heart goes out to all those pets that are scared, hungry and most of them will not be reunited w/ their owners ever again. I have a large box of cats/dogs food to send out to breezy point. If anyone knows what is the correct location to send this donation please post info. dad, good luck w/ your IGNORANCE in life.

we are talking about loose pets no-one cares about- lets stop wasting time and money on them and put them to sleep. ITs better than keeping them caged up and they will go nowhere. Its time to get real and stop wasting time and money on these animals.
