RVC Fire Scene Becomes Health Hazard

Rotting food in E&W Deli cannot be removed until the Nassau County Health Department lifts its food embargo.

A sickening and disgusting condition at what is left of the E&W Deli on North Long Beach Road has village officials trying to get the Nassau County Health Department to take action.

The tragic fire at the deli forced the village to condemn the building and on July 18, the County Health Department embargoed all the food contents of the store.

Over the course of the last two weeks, with no air conditioning and unseasonably warm temperatures, the contents of the store have rotted and attracted insects and other vermin.

The side window, which was broken by the Fire Department in order to vent the building, remains wide open to potential rats and mice, and a foul smell is emanating all the way to the rear parking lot.

At the Village Building Department, an inspector said that no one can go into the store to clean up its contents until and unless the County Health Department lifts the embargo.

The Nassau County Health Department’s office, which handles the health sanitarians, said they were looking into the matter.

Mayor Francis X. Murray said he will “get on it immediately.”

Until the county acts, the store remains an insect-infected spectacle which has passersby stopping to comment. Of more concern is that this store is part of the building which houses the Subway Sandwich franchise and some customers said they were worried about an eventual infestation of that location.
