Rockville Centre Gas Stations In Short Supply

High demand for gasoline takes its toll on local gas stations

It was a chaotic scene at the Rockville Centre Hess station on Friday afternoon, as Long Island residents desperately in need of gasoline waited in line to fill up.

At around 1:15 p.m., a gas truck pulled up to the station and started refilling the pumps, making Hess the only gas station in the village with gas for sale.

“It’s going to go out quicker than it’s going in,” a Hess attendant said.

Rockville Centre Police and New York State Troopers were on hand to control the line of cars backing up traffic on Sunrise Highway, as horns blared and arguments started brewing between the impatient customers.

The sidewalks were also busy, as customers on foot carrying gas containers formed a line of their own. Other pedestrians walking by anxiously reached for their cell phones to alert others of the gas supply.

Other stations around Rockville Centre were not as lucky, as gas stations across the village have no gas and are not sure of when their next shipment will come in.

“I haven’t had gas since Tuesday,” Chuck, a Mobil attendant, said. “I sold out Tuesday and haven’t gotten a delivery. I was supposed to get it yesterday and it never came.”

“It’s just crazy,” he added. “I have no idea when I’m getting it.”

The entrances to both the Mobil and Gulf stations on Sunrise Highway were blocked off with caution tape and cones, as both stations were sold out of gas.

“It’s been like a war zone,” an attendant at the Gulf station said.

The Getty station on Long Beach Road is still without power and cannot sell gas until they get the power back.
