Rockville Centre Gas Stations In Short Supply

High demand for gasoline takes its toll on local gas stations

It was a chaotic scene at the Rockville Centre Hess station on Friday afternoon, as Long Island residents desperately in need of gasoline waited in line to fill up.

At around 1:15 p.m., a gas truck pulled up to the station and started refilling the pumps, making Hess the only gas station in the village with gas for sale.

“It’s going to go out quicker than it’s going in,” a Hess attendant said.

Rockville Centre Police and New York State Troopers were on hand to control the line of cars backing up traffic on Sunrise Highway, as horns blared and arguments started brewing between the impatient customers.

The sidewalks were also busy, as customers on foot carrying gas containers formed a line of their own. Other pedestrians walking by anxiously reached for their cell phones to alert others of the gas supply.

Other stations around Rockville Centre were not as lucky, as gas stations across the village have no gas and are not sure of when their next shipment will come in.

“I haven’t had gas since Tuesday,” Chuck, a Mobil attendant, said. “I sold out Tuesday and haven’t gotten a delivery. I was supposed to get it yesterday and it never came.”

“It’s just crazy,” he added. “I have no idea when I’m getting it.”

The entrances to both the Mobil and Gulf stations on Sunrise Highway were blocked off with caution tape and cones, as both stations were sold out of gas.

“It’s been like a war zone,” an attendant at the Gulf station said.

The Getty station on Long Beach Road is still without power and cannot sell gas until they get the power back.

Merrick Road (heading West) in Rockville Centre is jam packed with cars... I don't even know which gas station they are on line for!! Last night I got gas at the Gulf Station on Sunrise Hwy in Merrick. They were lining up on Sunrise Hwy and also Merrick Avenue (coming from Merrick Rd). Heads up though, there's a Hess station just past the Gulf Station so many cars were breezing past the Gulf line and creating a separate line for Hess. Seemed shorter last night but who knows what it's like now.... I waited 3 hours.

Thanks for the above post and for letting the residents know. I've been on line since 4:23am. There are about 20 cars in front of me and I can't even see the end of the line at this point.

This is going out to all residents of RVC: again, I personally want to thank every one for their patience waiting in lines. And we had the smoothest run in surrounding area. Thanks to all who stepped to the plate to help. I have one special request all waiting in line to get gas at my place that NOT TO BLOCK MY NEIGHBORS' & RESIDENTS DRIVE WAYS, most importantly our Mayor, Honorable Mr. Murray as he is out & about on a split second notice under these circumstances. Couple of other requests we have of our customers waiting: THERE WILL BE NO GAS CANS FILLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE AT THIS LOCATION. DEPENDING UPON WHEN & HOW MUCH GASOLINE WE GET, WE will announce it right on this page with all the details. Once again, we thank our Mayor & THE VILLAGE CREW for the outstanding job in restoring power as quickly as they could & try to bring life back to normal. (Please keep our telephone lines open so I can get the updates from the terminal & my dispatcher). We are @ JMD AUTO CARE LTD 232 North Long Beach Rd RVC NY 11570 Thanks & regards, Sudesh Chohan
