Hispanic Brotherhood Volunteer Honored By Local Bank

Marion Meitner received the Citizens Bank Citizen of the Week award.

A volunteer with the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre has been selected by Citizens Bank as the, “Citizens Bank Citizen of the Week” for tutoring and providing English language instruction for children in need on Long Island.

Marion Meitner, a retired high school Spanish teacher from Jericho, works with students who have limited English language skills in the Hispanic Brotherhood’s After-School Child Care and tutorial program. The Hispanic Brotherhood is committed to serving the fast-growing Hispanic population on Long Island with resettlement services, educational programs and housing and employment counseling.

The “Citizens Bank Citizen of the Week” recognizes the work of volunteers who have performed outstanding community service on behalf of non-profit organizations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.

“We are thrilled to honor Marion Meitner as the ‘Citizens Bank Citizen of the Week,’” said James P. Gaspo, president of Citizens Bank New York. “Language is the key to learning and communicating, and Marion ensures that these young people who are learning English as a second language have the necessary tools to succeed now and in the future.”

Many of the children Meitner works with are recent immigrants who speak little to no English. She provides language instruction to students who also receive homework help, take part in educational workshops and have a place to play at the Hispanic Brotherhood while their parents work.

“The assistance these children receive helps them thrive in school and lays the groundwork for the attainment of higher education – an area in which the Hispanic population of Long Island significantly lags behind the general population," said Margarita Grasing, executive director of the Hispanic Brotherhood. "Marion volunteers three hours per week, and her work helps put children on the path to educational and career success.”
