Harmon Discount Closes Doors

Yet another business will close its doors in Rockville Centre, and this one comes during a holiday season when budgets are tighter and consumers are looking for discounted prices and sales.

Harmon's Discount on Merrick Road has closed after it could not reach an agreement on a new lease, officials said. The cosmetic, health and pharmaceutical item store served village residents for more than four decades. Bed, Bath and Beyond bought Harmon's ten years ago, and a representative from the chain said costs and other factors led to the store's closure.

"We constantly look at all of our locations to determine if it should be maintained once we consider the occupancy costs and closeness to other locations," said Bari Fagan, a spokesperson for the chain. "After that, it was determined we would close the story in Rockville Centre."

Other Harmon stores are located in and Carle Place.

Village resident Linda Miller said she was upset about the closure because it was a good place for residents to find a deal.

"I shopped their occasionally, their prices were always good," Miller posted on RVC Patch's Facebook page. "I usually found great stocking stuffers there! I will miss it, and yes, I'm upset. I think alot of people are upset. I always saw people on the street carrying those yellow Harmon bags! It was a convenient store."

Resident Laura Martingano agreed with Miller. "It was better than CVS," she said. "They always had great deals and it was close to my apartment. I'm really upset about this."
