Five Pennies Creamery: Rich Homemade Ice Creams

RVC's newest ice cream parlor serves more than 100 flavors.

As Rockville Centre's newest homemade ice cream parlor, Five Pennies Creamery on Park Avenue boasts 100 flavors that rotate 31 choices at any given time. More than that, Five Pennies serves Coney Island custard, a richer, made-from-eggs version of the usual soft-serve ice cream, as well as original Brooklyn egg creams.

Owner Dan Levine's concept was to recreate a place that he enjoyed as a kid so that a new generation could have that same experience. He makes the ice cream, as well as ices, ice cream pies and cakes, right on the premises. The store also offers ice cream sodas and blended iced coffees. "There is no skimping on anything," Levine said. "All the ingredients are top of the line."

The staff gladly offers tastes of the ices and ice creams, both of which are flavorful. The ice cream is especially rich. The mango ice is as close to a ripe mango as one can get in frozen form. The vivid blue Smurfs flavor, featuring mini-marshmallows, is said to make tongues turn blue, and chocolatta ice cream with bits of chocolate and nuts lives up to its name.

The signature dish is the Cyclone, named after the famous Coney Island roller coaster, presented in layers of ices and Coney Island custard. And what's in an original Brooklyn egg cream? Levine proudly pulled out a mega-jar of U-Bet chocolate syrup and old fashioned glass seltzer bottles in blue and green.

Service is prompt and friendly, and store hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and noon to 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, although, Levine said, he will not shut the door on anyone stepping in at the last minute.

The décor is calm and understated, with tables sporting chrome trim and hefty wrought iron bases. The effect is a touch of the past with modern comfort.

The Five Pennies name is a way of paying homage to his parents, Levine said. It's the name of a song from an old Danny Kaye and Louis Armstrong movie of the same name, he noted. Just like it is a lullaby in the movie, Levine said, his parents sang him the song, and in turn, he sang it to his children, wishing them dreams, dancing, laughter, and absence of tears and love. "The message of the song was, if you have these five things, you'll be rich," explained Levine. He has certainly created rich ice cream for the Five Pennies Creamery.
