Business Q&A: Lazy Daisy Stitchery

A different kind of hobby shop.

It was May of 2007 when Diana Burns opened on Merrick Road. After leaving her job as a Barnes and Noble manager, she took one of her favorite hobbies, counted cross stitch, and turned it into a career. Almost five years later, the business is still going strong. The shop offers an array of needlework supplies, fabrics, floss and patterns. They also offer classes such as “The Breakfast Club.” This class allows students to devote time to work on long form projects. Here, Burns describes what makes Lazy Daisy Stitchery a one of a kind stop in Rockville Centre.

Why did you decide to open Lazy Daisy Stitchery?

Cross stitch has been a hobby all my life. I decided to change careers and try my hand at opening my own business.

What are your most popular items?

I mostly sell counted cross stitch patterns. That’s 80 percent of the store. We’re a specialty shop and that’s what we’re known for. There’s not one particular one that sells over another because that’s all I sell.

Are many of your clients regulars?

Most of them are. I have classes twice a week that most of them come to. A lot of regulars come every week.

What makes Lazy Daisy Stitchery unique?

I’m probably the only store of it’s kind (on) all of Long Island, all of Queens and all of Manhattan. There’s not another one like it. There actually isn’t another counted cross stitch store anywhere.

What can customers find on your website?

I sell the charts, fabrics, threads, and all the accessories (such as hoops, scissors and needles). (You can find) anything you would need to do the craft.
