Business Q&A: Center for Science Teaching and Learning

Local not-for-profit offers a wide range of educational activities.

Spring break is approaching quickly and the Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL) wants to help keep kids busy. From April 6-13, it will be offering a spring camp for students who wish to learn about different types of sciences. Located on Tanglewood Road, the not-for-profit center offers a variety of services throughout the year for the entire family to enjoy. Here, CSTL Director Rayann Havasy previews some of their upcoming events.

What will kids learn at your spring camp?

They’re going to be doing all types of science activities. We focus on all of the sciences, so they’ll spend time doing some engineering projects building boats. We have live animals here, so they’ll spend some time learning about animals. They’ll (also) do some ecology studies. (It’s) lots of hands-on science explorations.

How can parents sign their kids up for camps?

They can either do it by printing out a registration form from our website or they can reserve a place (for our camps) over the phone.

What is your most popular camp?

They all fill up, but I think our summer camp still remains our most popular camp. I think that’s because, for the kid who doesn’t want to do sports all day long, we’re a very unique alternative.

What are your birthday parties like?

First of all, they’re fantastic. (Kids) will do a couple of hands-on activities. We provide everything for the birthday parties, except for cake and candles. When people sign up for a birthday party, they know that everything gets taken care of.

What can families look forward to at your Spring Festival (April 28-29)?

The purpose of it is to celebrate that spring is here. They’ll be taking home some plantings and doing some nature hikes. They’ll also be doing some activities to learn about our bees. It’s a whole day of all different activities. They can wander from one activity to another. We’ve planned about 12 different activities.
