Business Q&A: Bigelow's New England Fried Clams

With summer coming, Bigelow's is always ready to serve.

A summer beach outing wouldn’t be quite the same without a trip to on Long Beach Road. Opened in 1939, the restaurant has seen it all in Rockville Centre. The menu, as well as the surrounding area, has evolved with the passage of time. But despite the changes, fried clams have remained a staple. Here, Manager Chris Andreolas describes the ins and outs of running the local institution.

How has your menu changed over the years?

We’re here 73 years. In 1939, we opened up. Over the course of the years, we’ve added a few things to the menu. We have grilled seafood, such as grilled salmon, swordfish and tuna. When (we) first opened up in 1939, there were only five things on the menu. We have quite a few more things now.

What is your busiest time of year?

The summer months are the busiest time of year for us.

What do you like about operating in RVC?

Rockville Centre is a great town. We’re on Long Beach Road, so we get a lot of beach crowds during the summer. It’s a quaint, nice town to do business in.

Are many of your customers regulars?

Yes. We have (multiple) generations coming in. People started dating here and now they’re bringing their grandchildren in.
