Business Q&A: Artrageous

Everyone's an artist at this RVC studio.

Located on North Village Avenue,  is a haven for artists of any kind. Customers are welcome to walk in and create personal artwork. They offer birthday parties, classes, and get-togethers for both children and adults. Artragous is celebrating its seventh year in Rockville Centre. Here, owner Karen Rifai explains what makes her business unique.

Why did you decide to open Artrageous?

I have a love of ceramics and I wanted to share (it) with the general public. There aren’t a lot of places for people to do ceramics. I love ceramics because it’s a way of doing usable art, verses art that you hang. This is art that you can use in your everyday life. It’s for kids and adults. I like that aspect of it.

What kind of classes do you offer?

We offer classes for kids and adults in three art forms — painting ceramics, creating with clay and glass fusing. However, you don’t have to take a class to create at Artrageous. We’re a walk-in ceramics studio and we’re open seven days a week. You can walk in and create (at) any time. No experience or art ability is necessary. This is art for the non-artist. We just show you what to do and you splash around in some paint. The idea is to get your artwork, whatever it looks like, on to (something) for you to use.

What are your birthday parties like?

We do birthday parties for tons of kids, but we also do birthday parties for adults. We have full service birthday parties where parents don’t have to bring anything (except) the kids and a birthday cake. The kids can take pottery off of our shelves, use all of our materials to paint it, and leave it with us. We glaze it, fire it, and they pick it up in two weeks. We have hundreds of pieces to choose from and parties in every price range. The price varies by the size of the piece that you choose, but all the amenities are the same at the parties.

What can customers find on your website?

They can find a calendar of events and information about parties, upcoming classes and upcoming events.

What can customers expect at your BYOB wine and cheese parties?

We do them almost every Friday night. This is the only time of week where a person needs a reservation because it’s very often fully booked. Customers bring their favorite beverage, come in, and create with us. We offer snacks for them to enjoy while they’re painting on a Friday night.
