LIJ Medical Center Offers Free Mammograms in October

The program is available to uninsured or underinsured women, ages 50-64.

Screenings go a long way toward cancer prevention. That’s why during October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month – medical experts remind women to schedule their mammograms as well as other cancer screenings..

Long Islanders lacking insurance, take note: LIJ Medical Center is offering free, state-of-the-art 3-D mammograms for women ages 50-64, who are uninsured or underinsured and have not received a mammogram in at least a year.

Creating a clearer picture than standard mammograms, 3D screenings “look at each layer of breast tissue one at a time, which can help reduce false alarms that can come from overlapping tissues,” according to a statement put out by LIJ.

“Early detection is one of the main ways we save lives,” said Kaitlin Doyle, MSPH, Women’s Health Coordinator at LIJ Medical Center, in a press release.

“Regular screenings allow us to identify symptoms early, and patients achieve a better clinical result if treatment can begin sooner,” she added. “These screenings also ease women’s minds to know what their health status is and know there is treatment available if needed regardless of insurance or citizenship status.”

Studies reveal that women without health insurance are less apt to get screened for cancer and face a greater risk being diagnosed with an advanced stage of the disease, according to LIJ. The hospital also notes that all women with an average risk for breast cancer are encouraged to begin getting a mammogram at age 40.

Mammograms are conducted after a clinical breast exam is performed at the Ambulatory Care Unit at LIJ Medical Center, at 270-05 76th Avenue, first floor, Research Building, in New Hyde Park. The mammograms are provided at the Schlanger, Gottlieb, Partners Council Breast Imaging Center at North Shore-LIJ’s Center for Advanced Medicine at 450 Lakeville Road in Lake Success, across from the main entrance to LIJ Medical Center. The screenings are offered Monday-Saturday, by appointment only.

Clinicians at LIJ Medical Center also offer pelvic exams, pap smears and colon cancer screenings.

Those needing treatment may contact North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute, a provider of robotic-aided assistance for minimally invasive surgeries and investigational medications, therapies and treatments.

For an appointment for a free cancer screening, call the LIJ Ambulatory Care Unit at 718-470-4165. Accessible by public transportation, the hospital also offers parking in its visitor’s garage.

And many of them will leave because the job pays next to nothing. Proctoring will be turned into aRead More complete nightmare

Many companies and municipalities are doing the same, as was predicted when the ACA was debated.Read More Logical business decision.

Because of IB there are not many AP's taken at South Side. Somebody correct me if I am wrong onRead More this, but I think the only one that is taken is calculus, so it is really not a statistic that would get too many people upset...of course you hope they do well on every test, but senior calculus is a class that I think many kids kind of bail on and just concern themselves with passing after their college acceptances come in.

I would also like to note that there is no alarm among parents about the fact that our average APRead More score is 1.8 and Baldwin's is almost double that. I thought this was supposed to be about the students.

I don't know how many times I read during the bond discussion that we are a nationally ranked schoolRead More and deserve world class facilities. The #22 was a major talking point. All I'm saying is that we hang the plague in the hallway when the news is good but when the rankings decline there is not a word about it in the 2 weeks since they were published.

Hey Matt Hogan, While I don't buy into posts that you are Johnson's press secretary and him havingRead More a hand in running this publication, I do believe myself and many other readers here would appreciate an in depth, unbiased and objective interview w/ him asking the tuff questions your readers asked here. He always seems available to comment on and inflate the slightest bit of positive news, perhaps he would like the opportunity to comment on and explain his take on the latest rankings, etc. Have you or any member of your staff ever directly interviewed him or requested and interview w/ him and would you consider requesting such an interview?

It is nothing short of amazing that people are still rushing to the defense of Johnson/Burris andRead More their minions at the PTA. What's wrong w/ you people? When the rankings come out positive they do everything they can to publicise them from plaques on the wall to streaming video on the district website and everything in between. Yet not a peep on the latest rankings. 500+ ranking in NYS, people thats based solely on test scores not the # of kids taking the test and how many free lunches the district provides. Do any of you wonder at all why Johnson encouraged kids to "opt out" of NYS testing? If so let me help you out...The scores are going to be awful and would have been worse had all the kids participated. The quality of life in this town and its education system is circling the bowl, we need positive change not the same old go along to get along mentality. Pls think about voting for Ms Rubino, we need some balance and accountability on that board not a bunch of Johnson puppets. Not sure when Johnson's contract is up but he too has got to go, he is slowly destroying this district. We might try to hire Baldwin's superintendant as he really seems to know what he is doing when it comes to AP.

This is the funniest blog post ever. Someone thinks Patch is run by Johnson, another should haveRead More used the more appropriate pseudonym "know it all" and the most recent thinks the PTA is ruining our neighborhood. Go to a meeting, get involved, educate yourself. If you can't go to a meeting watch the local government and school channel. Then perhaps you would know that the bulk of the school budget is dictated by NY state.
