What to Do (and Not) After a Power Outage

Helpful tips to those who may still be suffering a power outage or have recently had their power restored.

If you’re one of those still experiencing a power loss or have had your power restored after a long outage, we have several tips and warnings you should know about, courtesy of the  and Center for Disease Control.

Here are several tips about what to do and not do following a power outage:

  • Throw away food that has defrosted since they tend to spoil quickly. Likewise don’t refreeze any food that has already defrosted.
  • When power is lost, water purification systems may also not work. Safe water for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene includes bottled, boiled or treated water. Use bottled water or boil water for cooking if you have a gas range.
  • Many reports continue to come in about downed power lines. Should you see a downed line when you go outside to check damage, call the authorities immediately. If a wire or pole should fall on your car with you inside, do not leave the vehicle. One should only leave the vehicle if it is on fire – open the door and jump away from the car to avoid the chance of electrocution.
  • Keep a flashlight and portable radio with you to see in the dark and to stay informed/ entertained. With the power out, that also means no TV!
  • If you have medication that requires refrigeration, check with your pharmacist/physician on proper storage during an extended outage.
