UPDATE: Village Works to Restore Lost Power, Clear Roads

Less than 500 homes lost power during the storm, officials said.

Less than 500 Rockville Centre homes lost power during Hurricane Irene, and village crews have been working since early this morning to restore it, officials said.

According to Village Spokesman Jeff Kluewer, the village is working on first repairing downed distribution lines — which service entire neighborhoods — then service lines, which bring power to individual homes.

"If a person is calling because a service line is down, they are way down the list," Kluewer said. "We want to take care and repair lines that will restore power the quickest."

He added that the Electric Company has maps of the village's electrical system at its office, so they can identify where single service and distributions lines are down before heading out.

Right now, crews are working on Reeve Road, Harvard Avenue north of Judson, the Greystone area and parts of Muirfield and Fonda roads, Kluewer said. He explained that repairs could be temporary or even delayed for days if a telephone pole goes down because Verizon, not the village, owns the majority of them.

"If a pole snaps, which has happened on Muirfield and Fonda, they'll have to wait for Verizon to come and reset poles," he said.

There were no injuries reported during the storm, and all major roads and secondary roads have been cleared of fallen trees and debris. Flooding was only reported at Mill River.
