RVC's New DPW Superintendent Takes Reins

Tom Cardile was deputy superintendent of the village's electric department for 13 years; now heads entire DPW.

After 13 years as the deputy superintendent of Rockville Centre's electric department, Tom Cardile is bringing his talent and expertise to the next level — as superintendent of the village's Public Works Department.

Cardile, a certified professional engineer in New York, now supervises the entire Public Works Department, which includes the water department, information technology, sanitation, highways, sewers, the village garage and the sign shop.

A graduate of Xavierian High School in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Cardile went on to earn a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.

After his undergraduate studies, Cardile attended graduate school — also at the Polytechnic Institute — and earned a master's degree in electrical engineering. The ambitious Cardile continued his graduate education by obtaining a Master's of Science and Management Studies degree from Pace University.

"I keep my skills current with education," Cardile said.

Since taking over the position last month, Cardile said he's utilized his employees to better the department. "I have been interviewing my new staff," he said. "We have good people working for us and I want to hear from everyone; their ideas on how we might work to make things better."

Rockville Centre Mayor Mary Bossart expressed her satisfaction with the job Cardile has done since taking over, as well as the projects he's undertaken.

"I'm very happy with the transition so far," Bossart said. "Tom is supervising a major tank replacement project at DPW and an extensive road project in the Greystone area. He's  also streamlining various management processes within the department to maximize efficiency and deliver the best service for the residents."

Cardile said he misses the people he used to work with, but expressed his excitement for the new position. "I'm looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities of more responsibility, supervising a larger workforce."

Married with two children, Cardile said that he likes to bicycle and exercise in his spare time.
