RVC’s Margarita Grasing Receives Women of Distinction Award

Grasing honored for her work with Long Island's Hispanic population.

On Sept. 17, New York State Assemblyman Brian Curran gathered eight outstanding Long Island women at the Lynbrook Public Library for the inaugural Women of Distinction awards luncheon. Among the honorees was RVC resident and executive director of the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre, Margarita Grasing.

“My Women of Distinction ceremony is meant to celebrate and honor the accomplishments of eight women who have made their communities better places to live and raise a family,” Curran said. “Margarita Grasing has dedicated her life to enhancing and improving the lives of the Hispanic community on Long Island.”

Grasing became the executive director of the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre in 1984 and has overseen its after school tutorial program for students, an employment program for students over 14 years old and the senior citizen nutrition program. The organization also provides employment, immigration and entitlement assistance for residents.

“I am very grateful that Assemblyman Curran thought of me for this honor,” Grasing said. “ He has done a lot of great work and he put together a beautiful ceremony for us.”

In addition to her work with the Hispanic Brotherhood, Grasing has served Nassau County as a board member for the Rockville Centre Education Foundation, the Nassau County HIV Commission and the Nassau County Coalition of Youth Agencies, among other organizations.

Assemblyman Curran was joined by State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Rockville Centre, and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, both of whom gave remarks at the awards luncheon.

Reflecting on the first annual Women of Distinction awards, Curran said, “I am extremely proud of the eight ladies who were recognized and I am truly grateful that they reside in the community of the 14th Assembly District that I represent.”
