RVC Residents Sound Off on Camel Crickets

Recent Facebook post yields several ways to get rid of any infestation.

We recently asked fans on the Rockville Centre Patch Facebook page if anyone else had the pictured critter (camel crickets) hopping around their basement. If so, we then asked if anyone had any success getting rid of them.

More than fifty responses later, we had a pretty good idea of how to get rid of the pesky, and almost always noisy, critters.

Glue traps were the No. 1 answer with several other suggestions coming in. Read the following tips from RVC residents below and feel free to list your own in the comment section.

  • Lisa Gundersen Umansky: I caulked all pipes leading into the house from the outside. (caulked inside too where i could) They like moisture and hang out by the outside spigots. Helped tremendously!
  • Mark Vanco: Hardware store on Merrick rd in Rvc off of park Ave or ace have cricket sticky traps. They are the best. But yes moisture is the culprit.
  • Tom Mulroy: Diatomaceous Earth will handle anything with an exoskeleton. Ants, beetles, etc. I use it for Japanese beetles in the garden. It's not-toxic for Humans, it's used in grain silos for pest control, so you have been ingesting it your entire life already.
  • Donna Russo Rubino: I use a company called Alternative Earth Care, (based in Commack/Northport) they use a garlic spray and I have maybe one or 2, if that... My house may smell like a italian deli for a bit, but I use it to cook anyway :)
  • Mike Farrell: a big shoe
