Open a Window to Holistic Health

Embrace what it can do for you.

"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."
— Thomas Edison

For many people, holistic health remains a mystery. As a holistic health and wellness coach, I get asked questions about what this term actually means. Many believe it excludes conventional care and any type of over-the-counter medicine or prescription drugs.

But on the contrary, holistic health offers an approach that integrates the mind, body and emotions. It investigates the root causes of illness, chronic symptoms or disease, and recognizes the powerful affect these components have on your health. Holistic health can complement conventional medicine in a multitude of ways.

Rather than match a pill to a problem that may mask a serious illness, holistic health looks for answers by asking many questions. Of course, there are times when conventional medicine is crucial and it saves lives every day. So taking prescriptions is not off the table, but some due diligence is required. For instance, I encourage my clients to investigate the effectiveness of lifestyle changes and to determine risk and possible side effects before signing on to manage a chronic condition with medication.

Conventional medicine tends to compartmentalize disease whereas holistic medicine asserts that it is all connected, and advocates for an innovative approach using a variety of healing modalities to uniquely meet the needs of each individual patient.

The most important aspects to note is that you hold the keys to your health and you must advocate for yourself or for loved ones when receiving medical care. In order to cultivate optimal health, you need to be engaged and proactive.

One way to be proactive is to discover and experience Blue Firmament Holistic Center right here in Rockville Centre. They are celebrating its five-year anniversary this month.

Blue Firmament was created from the combined vision of a lovely mother/ daughter team. Maggie, a respiratory therapist, reiki practitioner and raw foodist, has a passion for preparing delicious and nutritious foods, and healing the body and soul in a variety of holistic modalities. Sheiva, on the other hand, has a background in event planning and loves bringing in events that educate, entertain and inspire people. Their combined passion and zest has created a very unique healing center that cultivates a community of health-centered individuals.

It's a place that feeds your soul as well as your belly. For instance, last Sunday, I experienced Maggie’s passion and proficiency for preparing foods with different flavors and textures. I enjoyed a savory and nutrient dense dish of daikon with tahini pate.

Afterward, I felt so satiated and well nourished! Maggie’s delicious raw food cuisine delights people from all over New York. Likewise, Sheiva’s standout events are the Rhythm Jam that takes place on the last Saturday of each month and Belly Dancing every Saturday.

Blue Firmament is an oasis of healing and happiness with a peaceful, warm and welcoming atmosphere. Check out their Web site to see upcoming events, their yoga class schedule, and the healing modalities offered such as massage therapy, reiki, polarity, organic skin care and much more. They are a resource for a variety of food staples, herbal supplements, skin care, essential oils and have the Kangen Filtered Water System, which offers high-quality water that restores alkalinity to your system. Just bring your bottle and they will fill it up.

Sheiva is  planning a Nature Becomes You Photo Exhibit and Holistic Event on May 1. Additionally, I'm pleased to announce that I am teaming up with Blue Firmament to present a Breast Wellness Event on June 3

I would love to hear about what holistic practices work for you.
