Misoperation in Relay to LIPA Substation Causes RVC Blackout

Nearly 7,000 residents lost power at 8:47 p.m. on Wednesday night.

Nearly 7,000 homes — or about 70 percent of Rockville Centre Electric customers — lost power at around 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday night, and village officials said the cause was a misoperation of a relay in LIPA's Ocean Avenue substation.

By 9:25 p.m., all those who lost power had it restored.

At 8:47 p.m. on Wednesday, 6,729 RVC Electric customers lost power, which was the height of the outage. Twenty minutes later, 3,613 customers had power restored. By 9:24 p.m., power was restored to all who lost it.

As of 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, the transmission system had been fully restored to normal operations, officials said. Village Spokesman Jeff Kluewer added that the village cannot pinpoint the areas affected and restored, but there are about 10,000 customers in the system.
