Mercy Medical's Murphy Named Physician of the Year

Local doctor wins prestigious national award for 2010.

Dr. Daniel Murphy, Mercy Medical Center's director of Emergency Services and senior director of Patient Care Operations, has been named 2010 Physician of the Year by the New York State Society of Physician Assistants.

Murphy was honored for his longtime support of the utilization of physician assistants in the delivery of healthcare services and his outspoken affirmations of the vital role they play in assuring comprehensive quality care.

The award was presented this month at Society's annual conference in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Murphy, who's from Garden City, joined Mercy in 2004 as director of Emergency Medicine and was given the addition responsibility of senior director of Patient Care Operations in 2008. He came to Mercy from Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, where he was vice chairman and medical director of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

His two decades of experience in emergency and trauma care include earlier positions as research director in the department of Emergency Medicine at Resurrection Medical Center, and assistant director of research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Cook County Hospital, both in Chicago.

Murphy is board certified in Emergency Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Medicine. A graduate of Georgetown University, he received his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School and earned an MBA from Hofstra University.
