Mercy Hosting Summer Diabetes Program

Continuing to address one of the most pressing public health concerns facing Long Island and the nation, Mercy Medical Center is offering summer sessions of its popular outpatient Diabetes Self-Management Training Program.

The four-session program will be conducted in June, July and August. Each begins with an hour-long individual assessment, followed by three weekly group sessions.

Group sessions will be conducted Tuesdays evenings in June from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday afternoons in July from 12:30-3:30 p.m. and in August on Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Conducted by instructors credentialed by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators, the program provides participants with the skills required for day-to-day management of diabetes and simple strategies for meal planning and preventing complications.

Those who can benefit from the program include both individuals recently diagnosed with diabetes and those who have been living with it for some time, along with those who are confused about what to eat, those having difficulty controlling blood sugar, those who have experienced consequences of diabetes, and those who want to maximize energy and improve emotional well-being.

The program is most often covered by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance.
