Mayor: Help Those Less Fortunate This Holiday Season

Mayor asks RVC residents to help those devastated by Sandy.

The following is from Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray:

Season’s greetings to all Rockville Centre residents!

This holiday season will be a difficult one for many of our neighbors in nearby communities who have suffered great losses during Hurricane Sandy. As the fortunate ones who were spared, many of us believe it is up to us to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Last month we announced the formation of the RVC Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, similar to the Community Fund in that its goal is to raise funds for those in need. However, it will be available to those who live outside of the Village of Rockville Centre.

It was established in response to the needs of so many in our neighboring communities impacted by Sandy. A new volunteer service organization was also formed by village residents shortly after the storm, called RVC H.O.M.E. (Helping Others Means Everything).

These volunteers have spent a significant amount of time assessing the needs of our neighbors and have provided household necessities, meals, comfort and support. H.O.M.E. is the vehicle that the RVC Foundation will use to distribute the funds to storm victims.

This December, we ask for your help to bring a little holiday cheer to families who haven’t had much to smile about in the past six weeks. Your donation will allow us to offer these families direct financial assistance, wholesome meals and, in some cases, the replacement of home essentials. While we cannot help everyone, our goal is to help families from these communities.

We recognize that this has been a trying year for many, not just for those hit by Sandy. But we ask you to give as generously as you can. Be assured that 100 percent of your donation will directly assist these families. Please use the return envelope for your tax-deductible donation made payable to RVC Foundation. If you have questions call 516-678-9260 or email RVCFoundation@rvcny.us. Thank you for your support.

Best wishes to you and your families for a happy holiday season and a happy and healthy 2013.

What to help the unfortunate? Ask Skelos why he appoints an accountant, a dietician, and now an insurance guy to the LIPA board when thousands of businesses and people were thrown in the dark for weeks, exacerbated by poor management by LIPA? I have a few friends that have packed it in and moving to my neck of the woods because their businesses were left in the dark for so long, they folded! There would be less unfortunates around if there was more effective leadership... an area where NY is lacking in spades.
