Local Fitness Boot Camp Brings Hurricane Relief

Strong-Healthy-Woman Boot Camp helps neighboring communities.

Last Saturday, women of all ages and walks of life joined forces with celebrity fitness trainer Laura Miranda to sweat their way through a Strong-Healthy-Woman Boot Camp in Oceanside to raise much-needed funds for local hurricane relief.

"Five weeks after Hurricane Sandy many people were back to life as normal, it was as if the storm had never happened," Miranda said. "Unfortunately there are so many local Long Islanders that continue to suffer; I was determined to keep up the awareness and the support and not let anyone be forgotten."

Miranda, who is also the founder of Strong-Healthy-Woman, harnessed the power of her fitness network and between her two outdoor boot camp locations in downtown NYC and Oceanside, Long Island was able to raise $1,300.

According to Miranda, one of the her campers, an Oceanside resident, had no power or hot water and even lost her car during the storm, but still managed to come to boot camp every morning because it was her "only escape from this bad dream that I can't wake up from."

The fitness trainer said that the unparalleled camaraderie and support that this group of women have for each other during their daily workouts, was again demonstrated as many of them jumped at the chance to bring aid and practical help in the clean up process just days after the hurricane had hit.

"Personally having no power for four days was a tiny spec of inconvenience compared to what was going on in the hardest hit areas," Miranda said. "I could no longer sit by and watch the devastation on the news from my warm apartment, so I grabbed a shovel, heavy gloves and convinced a few strong boot campers to go with me to help in a very practical way."
