Get Out (If Weather Permits) - Your Local Guide to the Weekend, Aug. 27-28

We’ve found plenty to do this weekend and if the weather cooperates, there’s some fun outdoor events planned for the community.

If Hurricane Irene does decide to visit Long Island, we’ve found some indoor things to keep you occupied as well. Please check the availability of these events before heading out in case of cancellations due to the weather and listen for instructions from local authorities about when to stay home (or even evacuate) the area.

Fight Hunger with Laughter

• Where: Holiday Inn of Westbury, 369 Old Country Road Carle Place.
• When: Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. 
• Why go: This comedy troupe, featuring Fred Rubino and four additional comics, promises to put on a hilarious show, and all for a great cause. This benefit contributes to food banks in our area and admission is only a donation of non-perishable food. Singers Showcase

• Where: Peninsula Library, 280 Central Ave. Lawrence. Phone: 516 239-3262
• When: Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
• Why go: Mezzo-soprano Frances Devine and bass-baritone Richard Cassell perform Broadway music, Yiddish songs and arias from grand opera. Tickets required, please call for more information.

• Cost: Free

Scottish Festival

• Where: Old Westbury Gardens, 71 Old Westbury Road. 
• When: Saturday, Aug. 27 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Where: Old Westbury Gardens
• Why go: A day of bagpipe music, dancing, singing, Celtic vendors and Scottish food.  There will be games and events for children and traditional Scottish Highland Games

• Cost: $15 adults, $10 seniors, $5 children

Meet Psychics

• Where: Hampton Inn Garden City, 1 North Ave., Garden City 
• When: Sunday, Aug. 28 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Why go: This event provides psychic mediums who will perform readings. There will be various types of readings available, such as Tarot reading, palm reading, aura readings, and astrological readings. There will be vendors as well. 
• Cost: Free admission or $30 for readings.

Italian Festival

• Where: Michael J. Tully Park, Evergreen and Denton avenues in New Hyde Park
• When: Friday, Aug. 26, 6-11 p.m; Saturday, Aug. 27, 3-11 p.m; Sunday, Aug. 28, 3-11 p.m.
• Why go: Italian festival sponsored by the Sons of Italy Cellini Lodge in New Hyde Park. There will be music, international food court, games and rides. Definitely something for everyone here.

Zumba Class

• Where: Rockville Centre Parks and Recreation Department, 111 N. Oceanside Road, RVC, 516-678-9238
• When: Saturday, Aug. 27, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
• Why go: Zumba is hugely popular and this class makes it accessible to all. It involves dance and aerobic elements. It incorporates all different dance genres like hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, and martial arts to name a few. It’s definitely worth a try! Be sure to wear smooth-soled sneakers or flat shoes and workout-wear.

Hurricane Party

• Where: Bahia Social Club, 832 W Beech St., Long Beach. Phone: 516-442-1338
• When: Friday, Aug. 26, Saturday, Aug. 27 from 7:00 p.m.–1:00 a.m.
• Why go: Ride out Hurricane Irene in style at Bahia in Long Beach! They are offering their own brand of hurricanes for $5 along with wings and other food/drink specials.  As they describe it “Come on foot, come by boat, bring a friend, bring a flashlight, as long as the ice lasts you'll have a Hurricane!”

Soldier March

• Where: Monroe Blvd & Boardwalk, Long Beach
• When: Sunday, Aug. 28, beginning at 8 a.m.
• Why go: Peaceful Minds, a project sponsored by FJC, is holding a 5 Mile March on the boardwalk. Soldiers will be doing a 10 Mile March at the same time. Participants can either run or walk. This organization serves as a wellness center for veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom who suffer from PTSD, anxiety, headaches, depression, insomnia, pain and traumatic brain injuries. Peaceful Minds treats the veterans for free with therapies including reiki, acupuncture and massage.

• Cost: $20 to participate in the 5 mile. Also, you can sponsor a soldier in the 10 mile in increments of $10 a mile.

Musical Medley

• Where: Kennedy Plaza, 1 W Chester St., Long Beach
• When: Sunday, Aug. 28, from 10  a.m. – 5 p.m.
• Why go: This very special afternoon provides music, art, crafts, photography and fun. Performers include the talented duo of Hal Laufer and Andrea Beerman featuring their Nice N' Easy From Broadway to Hollywood" program, from 12:30-1:30 p.m.  From 1:45-2:45 p.m., singer-songwriter, Christine Solimeno, will be accompanying herself on guitar and bringing a delightful mix of originals and well known tunes to the Plaza.
