Don't Blow That Light!

Red light cameras installed at the Lakeview Avenue and Peninsula Boulevard intersection.

Don't run the red light at the intersection of Lakeview Avenue and Peninsula Boulevard or else you might be paying out of pocket for the indiscretion.

Nassau County crews recently installed red light cameras at the village intersection, and drivers who disobey traffic laws will find a $50 ticket waiting in their mailboxes along with a photo of their violation. These are the first red-light cameras in Rockville Centre, and were part of a county upgrade to all traffic lights throughout Peninsula Boulevard. Rockville Centre joins nearby Lynbrook, East Rockaway, Baldwin and Oceanside as South Shore villages with red light cameras.

Both Nassau and Suffolk counties got the approval from the state in 2009 to install red light cameras at their 50 most dangerous intersections.

According to a national study conducted by the Federal Highway Administration, the installation of red light cameras has been shown to decrease broadside crashes (at those intersections in which the cameras are installed) by approximately 25 percent.

Rockville Centre electricity will power one of the cameras because it is technically located in the village, however, will not receive any percentage of the fines collected through violations.
