St. Baldrick's Welcomed to Albany by Skelos & Curran; Legislators Salute Work to Fight Childhood Cancers

Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook – 21st A.D.) and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R,C,I – 9th District) recently welcomed the Founder & Chairman Emeritus of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, John Bender, to Albany and the New York State Assembly Chamber.

Bender, a Rockville Centre resident in Skelos and Curran’s respective districts, sponsored a head-shaving event over the weekend at the St. Agnes Parish Center to help fight childhood cancers.

For the tenth straight year, Assemblyman Curran proudly volunteered to be shaved and raise money for to combat the terrible disease.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers.  The charity was formed on March 17, 2000 by three insurance executives – John Bender, Tim Kenny and Enda McDonnell – who turned their company’s St. Patrick's Day celebration into a head shaving event to benefit kids with cancer.

Since its creation, the Foundation has raised over $200 million dollars to help fund cancer research for children.

The Foundation has issued medical research grants all over the United States including over 40 grants here in New York to: Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center; Stony Brook University Children’s Hospital; Albany Medical Center; SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse; research at the University of Buffalo; Roswell Park Cancer Institute at the University of Buffalo; Columbia University Medical Center; University of Rochester; Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx; Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; New York University School of Medicine; Mt. Sinai Hospital; New York Medical College – Vahalla Campus; Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx; Brooklyn Hospital Center; Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn; SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn; Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center; Winthrop University Hospital; and Cornell University.
