RVC School District art students display artwork and perform musical acts at inaugural event.
It isn’t very often that students get to display their artwork outside of school. But thanks to the Rockville Centre Sponsors of the Arts and TD Bank, select visual and performing art students got to do just that on Wednesday night at the Merrick Road TD Bank branch. The night, billed as "An Evening of Art and Music," featured performances from music students from both South Side Middle and High School. Performers played instruments ranging from the violin to the ukulele. “TD Bank is one of our biggest contributors,” RVC Sponsors of the Arts President Michelle Kildunne said of the idea for the inaugural event. “We put our heads together and said ‘How can we get the students displaying their art and performing (skills) outside of the …

Horror lovers make their way to the Sunrise Highway Best Western for the weekend.
L.C. Ginsberg could not have picked a better weekend to stage the first annual Macabre Fair. Held at the Mill River Manor Best Western, the fair acted as a haven for fans of everything horror, goth and steampunk. So, it was only fitting that the three day festival kicked off on Friday the 13th. Ginsberg is the owner of TwitchTwitch Productions, the group responsible for the weekend. The fair was the first of its kind on Long Island, according to Ginsberg. “We’re really proud of it because we feel like we’re the pioneers of what we’re doing,” she said. “[We’re] giving a home to steampunk lovers, renaissance lovers, horror fans and witches. [It’s] a place to gather and enjoy all things macabre.” The festival did just that. With a variety of…

Barbara Sheldon's 'Married to a Trial Liar' was released in October.
For Barbara Sheldon, the fulfillment of a lifelong dream began with a countertop. The Rockville Centre resident was having measurements done for kitchen alterations when she struck up a conversation with marble and granite saleswoman Sophia Moreau. The conversation quickly moved to Moreau’s personal life and her pending divorce. Moreau believed her life story was compelling enough to be told in print. Sheldon agreed. “I just thought I would be helping her (write the story),” Sheldon said. “I never thought it would become a book. (It) just took on a life of its own.” Moreau’s story was the basis for Married to a Trial Liar (Outskirts Press), released in October and co-authored by the two women. The book is a suspenseful, page-turner …

Yvonne Capitelli looks to maximize readers' self-esteem in 'I Get It! I Get It! - How John Figures It Out.'
Yvonne Capitelli’s life is significantly different now than it used to be. The 18-year Rockville Centre resident turned to writing after leaving a job in telecommunications — and she couldn’t be happier. Capitelli’s second book, I Get It! I Get It! - How John Figures It Out, was released in January and looks to help children diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), an affliction that affects the way children recognize information, according to kidshealth.org. Capitelli co-authored the book with clinical psychologist Dr. Loraine Alderman. The two storytellers met at a Long Island Authors Group meeting. After presenting her first book Daria Rose and the Day She Chose to the assembled members, Capitelli was approached by Alderman…

Musical stars former X-Factor contestant and American Idol finalist.
Since Molloy College opened its Madison Theater in November, the college has attracted A-list acts to perform and entertain at the 550-seat venue. This Thursday will be no different, as the $15 million theater will host the once-on-Broadway musical from Lee Summers, "From My Hometown" — a musical centered around three singers who leave their homes with the hopes of singing at Harlem's famed Apollo Theater. Revolving around the music of Motown and R&B, the show features American Idol Season 9 finalist Todrick Hall and recent X-Factor contestant Matthew Johnson. The musical opens on Feb. 2. Johnson and Hall agreed that it wasn't hard to embrace their roles in the musical because they both know the struggles that comes with chasing one's …
