County Announces List of Shelters, Warming Centers

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced Thursday that the county, FEMA, the Salvation Army and the Red Cross are distributing food and drinks to thousands of residents impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Locations are subject to change daily. County shelters and warming centers remain open to the public.

Mangano and the Red Cross have opened the following locations for residents to take shelter:

  • Nassau Community College, Building P
  • Farmingdale High School – 150 Lincoln St.
  • Glen Cove High School – 150 Dosoris Lane
  • New Hyde Park High School - 500 Leonard Blvd.

Red Cross Food Distribution

The Red Cross has opened a number of meal distribution centers Nassau County. Locations are open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Meals, water and comfort kits will be distributed at the following locations:

  • Cedar Creek Park in Seaford - Merrick Rd, east of Wantagh Avenue
  • Grant Park in Hewlett - Broadway & Sheridan Avenue
  • Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach - 880 Lido Blvd.

FEMA POD Locations

FEMA’s Points of Distribution (PODs) are located throughout the north and south shores of Nassau County. Locations include:

South Shore:

  • Atlantic Beach: Silver Point, 2189 Atlantic Blvd. (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
  • Baldwin Harbor: Meadow Elementary School, 888 Jackson St. (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
  • Bellmore:Newbridge Road Park, 2600 S. Newbridge Road. (7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
  • East Rockaway: Fire Department, 5 Main St. (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
  • Freeport: Recreation Center, located at the intersection of Main & Mill
  • Inwood: The No. 2 School, 1 Donahue Ave. (7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
  • Island Park: Heggerty School, 100 Radcliffe Road. (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
  • Lawrence: Five Towns Community Center, 270 Lawrence Ave.
  • Lido Beach: Lido St & Parkside St (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
  • Long Beach: East Elementary - Intersection of Neptune & Hudson Boulevard (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
  • Long Beach: West Elementary - Intersection of Maryland and Beach Street. (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
  • Long Beach: 85 E. Park Ave. (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
  • Massapequa: Marjorie R. Post Community Park, 451 Unqua Road. (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
  • Oceanside: Oceanside Park, 3800 Mahlon Brower Drive. (7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)

North Shore:

  • Bayville: Stehli Beach, Corner of Bayville Road & Bayville Avenue (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
  • Great Neck: Great Neck High School, 64 Arrandale Ave. (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
  • New Cassel/Westbury: New Cassel Community Center, 141 Garden St. (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.)

Shower Facilities

The county has opened the following locations for residents to take a free shower:

  • Aquatic Center, Eisenhower Park in East Meadow
  • Cantiague Park, West John St. in Hicksville
  • Mitchel Athletic Complex, Charles Lindbergh Blvd in Uniondale

FEMA’s Disaster Recovery Centers:

FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers are a readily accessible mobile office where applicants may go to receive guidance regarding disaster recovery, clarification of any written correspondence received, Housing Assistance and Rental Resource information, resolutions to problems and referrals to agencies that may provide further assistance, status of applications being processed by FEMA, as well as U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) program information.  Locations Open from 8am to 8pm daily (Opening today at 1 p.m. due to inclement weather):

  • Nassau Community College: 1 Education Drive, Garden City
  • Recreation Center and Ice Arena: 700 Magnolia Blvd., Long Beach
  • Island Park Village Hall: 127 Long Beach Road, Island Park
