AvalonBay Gets 'Green' Certification

Becomes northeast's first and largest multi-family rental community to receive certification.

AvalonBay Communities was recently honored with the NAHB Research Center green certification for its Rockville Centre location.

Avalon Rockville Centre, the Northeast’s first and largest multifamily rental community to receive this certification, was recognized for meeting the rigorous requirements of the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard (NGBS), the highest green and sustainable construction standards in the industry.

The certification of Avalon Rockville Centre was the result of a rigorous, multi-step process conducted by the NAHB Research Center-accredited green verifiers. It included comprehensive design reviews and multiple inspections throughout the building process to ensure that the community met the strict environmental criteria of the NGBS. NGBS categories of environmental performance include: site development, resource efficiency, energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality and operations, maintenance and building owner education.

In addition to being the first of its kind in the Northeast to be Green Certified by the NAHB Research Center, Avalon Rockville Centre has also received an ENERGY STAR® certification.  The sustainable features of this Transit Oriented Development (TOD) community include:  walking distance of LIRR and downtown Rockville Centre, indigenous and drought resistant landscaping, on-site recycling programs, energy efficient lighting and appliances, low VOC paints, carpets, and adhesives to enhance air quality, and LED pool lighting.

RVC Mayor Francis X. Murray, who attended the recognition on Monday, expressed how proud he was to have AvalonBay in the village.

“The transformation of this site, from the largest brownfield remediation in Long Island history to a vibrant residential community in the heart of our downtown, was the result of a great deal of hard work by the village and AvalonBay," he said. "AvalonBay has built a community that has been instrumental in the revival of our village center, contributes to our local economy, and provides much needed, high quality apartment homes...We can all be very proud of what has been accomplished here.”

The community has 349 apartment homes in two buildings. Building One contains 210 apartments and Building Two has 139 apartment homes.  Approximately 60 percent of the apartments are one-bedroom, with the remaining offered as two-bedrooms.
